A meeting needs no special place, only one where you can sit for two hours without having to order something every twenty minutes. In Vienna that means the old coffee houses with a back room, the city libraries with their reading rooms, and in summer the Augarten or the Türkenschanzpark. Half an hour on public transport also covers Mödling and Klosterneuburg.
What Vienna offers readers
Vienna has the coffee house tradition, where sitting for hours with a book needs no explanation, and a dense network of municipal libraries with the Hauptbücherei on the Gürtel at its centre. Readings happen all year round at the Literaturhaus and the Alte Schmiede. For anyone starting a book club, the problem is having too many occasions rather than too few.
How many people it takes
Four to six. Fewer, and the meeting falls apart as soon as two cancel. More, and not everyone gets a turn, and whoever stayed quiet twice will not come a third time.
