Reading in a small group

One book, a small group, and conversations that actually land

Notes arrive by reading position, not by time. What somebody writes about chapter twelve reaches you once you have got there yourself.

Wir Buchverliebten is just starting out, built in Vienna. If you are here early, you help shape how reading works here.

How it works

  1. One book and one agreement

A small group agrees on a book and on how far to read by when. The section is agreed by chapter, never by page.

  2. Read, and note as you go

If you want to say something about a passage, you write it right there. Your note stays where it was written.

  3. Arrive, and read what is waiting

Once you reach the same place, the notes of the others appear. Not before, however fast anyone else reads.

Two ways to begin

With others

Some book clubs meet in a café, others only write. Both work, and the difference is the rhythm: a meeting sets a deadline, an online book club or a buddy read needs an explicit agreement instead.

A book club is closed. You start one and invite the people you want to read with.

Start a book club

On your own

You do not need anyone to begin. Add the book you are reading, say which chapter you have finished, and write a public note about what struck you there. Only people who have got that far will see it.

We suggest this book so that you are not standing alone at a place. Whoever reads the same book finds thoughts from others there, as soon as they get that far themselves.

What a note looks like

12at chapter 12

The last three paragraphs floored me. I had to read them twice before I understood who is actually speaking.
This is what an annotation looks like. It sits at chapter 12 and reaches the others only once they have finished chapter 12. Until then nobody can see it, not even a hint that it exists. An example, not a post by a real person.
